Tennis fans are rejoicing today with the news that Andy Roddick is joining the ESPN team. The multi-year deal will have Roddick as an analyst for both match and studio coverage.

The news comes at a time when ESPN is looking to beef up its tennis broadcasts. At the Australian Open this year, ESPN shook up its commentator roster with longtime analysts Pam Shriver, Brad Gilbert and Darren Cahill not part of the team. These moves are all part of ESPN’s goal in bringing new energy to the tennis programming.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Andy to the team. ESPN has long led the way in delivering in-depth tennis analysis, and with several recent talent additions, we’ve further strengthened our coverage,” said Linda Schulz, ESPN Vice President of Production. “Andy brings a distinctive, energetic, and highly relevant voice that will elevate both our studio and match coverage.”

For the most part, Roddick stayed out of the tennis spotlight since retiring in 2012. He recently reemerged as a leader in the tennis world with the launch of his podcast, Served with Andy Roddick. The New York Times reported at the end of last year that the podcast had surpassed $2 million in revenue for the year, doubling its previous year.

From a fan perspective, the addition of Roddick is huge. He’s not only the last man to win a U.S. Open, but he’s also a household name and recognized across the country. ESPN’s addition of him to the roster will attract both an audience of diehard fans and casual fans looking to get back into the sport. The move is a win for fans, sponsors, ESPN, and everyone involved.
